day 4 Part One

Our best laid plans went astray this one day.

It was Stake Conference in NYC and our friends
the Wilcox's ditched us to head to Mass. to
visit family on Sat/Sunday and since we had no
clue where to go for OUR church and it was
Easter we had planned to go to St Johns
cathedral (right next door) to see Easter Mass.

The cathedral is AMAZING and we were really
excited.  BUT, this ONE day we all over slept
(meaning til 8:30 instead of waking up at 7 AM)
and Mass started at 8 and we missed the whole thing.

I was super bummed, I had wanted to see another
church celebrate Easter and hear the choir sing in
the massive cathedral.  We stopped by here on our
last day...more on that later.

So we did the next best thing and went to brunch
and "Church of the 5th Avenue" aka the NYC
Easter Hat Parade.

Usual spot...super quiet Sunday morning on the Subway.

Practically alone

More on the bridge later

Brunch

Blackberry and cream cheese brule french toast

Pasta Carbenara

Grace in her Easter Dress and China town glasses

Very quiet at the subway -- all stops

Who knew a chunk of the Berlin Wall was on a street
in Manhatten?  Well, here it is--we spotted it on the way
to 5th Avenue and the "parade".

So a little bit about the annual NYC Easter Parade
which started a zillion years ago--it is not really a
parade, but more of a milling around on a closed off
part of 5th Avenue.  In decades past it started as
people exiting Easter Masses and church services
and parading around to show off their beautiful
Easter hats and outfits.  In more recent years, it
has become a place to show off shocking and loud
and quite funny and wonderful colorful outfits
(and people).

There were Frank Sinatra singers, old time-y big
brass bands, break dancers, and people from 2012
and people that looked like they had stepped out of
1920.  I took a zillion pictures and Kyle took
a million more--here is a SMALL sampling.

People literally walk slowly up and down 5th Ave
and pose for pictures for anyone and everyone.

I loved it!  It was so fun to see such creativity!

There two barely moved all morning, too many
people taking pictures.  We loved the orange
and hot pink suits--and wondered where one
buys a suit of that color?!  They were FABULOUS!

This guy posed for picture after picture--
he made quite a statement too.

More Easter themed, bunny flower, hats.

The detail on her hat was AMAZING!

She looked like a beauty from the past.

These two were also some of my VERY
favorites--they were STUNNING in real life
and THIS is what the parade would've looked
like 100 years ago.

Kyle loved her hat

One of the churches on 5th ave--people here
were listening to an awesome brass band and singer.

Keeping it simple, yet classy

My all time fav of the day-his entire outfit--
Made from newspapers, even the shoes.
He made me laugh--he also had a LOT
of charisma and LOVED to show off
for the crowd.

And lest we forget the reason for the day!

This guy was very bright!

A street view

The ice rink at Rockefeller Center--
can you see who is skating with everyone?

Take another look!

Next we walk the Bridge, the BB, or Brooklyn Bridge!
Stay tuned
